Some everyday purchases will be more expensive at Aldi starting Monday, sometimes by as much as 50 percent. The president of the trade association makes a grim forecast.

Kassel – Over the course of the Ukraine conflict, food prices have skyrocketed. Discount store giant Aldi recently increased the prices of some groceries. Now, the next price shock is imminent. Due to the increase in costs, prices will increase again from Monday (04/04/2022).

This mainly affects foods such as meat, sausages and butter, which then become “significantly more expensive”, Florian Scholbeck, spokesman for Aldi Nord, told the German Press Agency (dpa). The reason for this is the higher prices Aldi has to pay its suppliers. “Since the start of the Ukraine war, there have been jumps in purchase prices that we have never seen before,” Scholbeck explained.

Costs in the supermarket are rising: meat, sausages and butter are getting more expensive at Aldi

In an interview with WAZ, Scholbeck said butter should cost 30 percent more. Other foods would be 20 to 50 percent more expensive. However, the Aldi spokesman assured: “There will be no empty shelves.” However, short-term bottlenecks cannot be ruled out.

Above all, the higher costs of animal feed and fertilizers, as well as energy, lead to higher prices. Many European countries get more than half of their fertilizer from Russia. But with the invasion of Ukraine, Russia stopped its exports. “Prices for resources such as fertilizer, diesel and animal feed are currently rising to record levels,” Johann Meierhöfer of the German Farmers’ Association tells DW. According to Aldi’s spokesman, this would in turn affect farmers in their livestock and in the meat industry.

Aldi Süd is also said to have caused a price increase. As WAZ reported, the increases vary by product. But food prices aren’t just rising at Aldi, customers will soon have to dig deeper into their pockets at other supermarkets and discounters as well. Due to the situation in world markets, “increasing sales prices throughout the industry cannot always be avoided…,” Edeka announced at the end of March. According to a survey by the Ifo Institute, almost all food retailers in Germany are planning price increases.

Food prices at Aldi are rising: prices will rise soon “everywhere in supermarkets”

As a result of rising energy costs, food prices had already increased by about five percent before the outbreak of the Ukraine war, Josef Sanktjohanser, president of the German Trade Association (HDE), told the Neue Osnabrucker Zeitung. Now the second wave of price increases is coming, “and it will certainly be double digits,” Sanktjohanser warned.

According to the president of the German Trade Association, consumers will be able to see this “on the price tags in all supermarkets”. in the Neue Osnabrucker Zeitung. As a result, consumers need to be prepared for more expensive purchases at supermarkets and discount stores such as Aldi, Lidl, Edeka and Rewe.

At the level of the Central Coordination for Trade and Agriculture (ZKHL), the main business and agricultural industry associations exchange views on the consequences of the war in Ukraine. The current wave of price increases has yet to reach consumers, ZKHL managing director Hermann-Josef Nienhoff said, according to dpa information. (kas with dpa)

Shortly before Easter, another food item could be in short supply at Lidl, Aldi and Co.
