Ferrero recall: cause of salmonella outbreak found

Arlon/Berlin/DUR/Crazy – A recall of products from Italian confectionery maker Ferrero has been in the headlines since early April. Bacteria may have gotten into the chocolate. Initially, however, it was said that only a few products from a Belgian factory might have problems with salmonella and therefore some children’s chocolate products would be recalled.

As is now known, the company has known about the problem since December 2021. However, the endangered items were not removed from the market until months later. Many customers find the behavior risky and scandalous, and the consumer advice center now also calls for all Ferrero children’s products to be avoided.

Salmonella danger: Ferrero risks customer trust

Ferrero has since apologized for not passing on the information in a timely manner, but that is of little use to those affected. So far, hundreds of salmonella cases across Europe have been linked to sweets produced in Arlon, Belgium, including the popular surprise eggs and Kinder Schoko-Bons.

Customers have lost confidence in the company and its products. The financial loss is currently not foreseeable. The Arlon plant was closed and the production license revoked. Salmonellae were found in a sieve at the outlet of two raw material tanks.

According to the supervisory authority (AFSCA), the plant in Arlon can only start production again if it can be shown that “all food safety standards and requirements” are met.

The current Ferrero case shows that personal responsibility and self-control are not enough for manufacturers. Authorities need more monitoring options. Silent recalls without public warning could cause serious health harm. Companies like Ferrero should be required by law to immediately warn their customers.
