GHG share: this is how rented electric cars make money

More than 40 percent of electric cars in Germany are rented vehicles. This means that they belong to the lessor, usually a bank, and are only made available to the renter for a fee during the term.

But even those who have only leased their electric car, i.e. they are not the legal owner, benefit from the GHG fee and can collect the GHG premium. Because what is decisive is that any person who appears as the owner in the vehicle registration document can participate in the trading of GHG quotas.

What is the GHG Quota?

Since January 1, 2022, end users have the same rights as industry: they can participate in the trading of pollution rights, known as GHG certificates. The objective is to avoid greenhouse gases (GHG), in particular carbon dioxide (COtwo).

Anyone who has bought a used electric car like the e-Golf can also collect the GHG premium.

who else COtwo the savings from those it actually issues will be financially rewarded. On the other hand, if you have more COtwo it emits more than it can save, it has to pay penalties for this less. This applies above all to industry, such as large fossil fuel producers like Shell or BP.
So if you use electric car or e-scooter, you can save your COtwo– Have a savings certificate and offer this certificate for sale through intermediaries. The GHG premium is up to 400 euros this year. It is sure to grow as the rate rises from 7 percent today to 25 percent in 2030, that’s what the law says.

How do I claim the prize?

Individuals cannot offer their certificates directly to large companies. Your only option is to commission intermediaries to sell your certificate. Since emissions trading was liberalized, there has been a real boom in brokerages.

Most agencies, often subsidiaries of energy providers, offer online registration. To do this, you must select your vehicle model in an app so that the technical data and the amount of CO savedtwo become transparent.

Electric scooters like the Trinity Romex are also eligible to participate in GHG quota trading.

The next step is to upload a photo of your registration certificate. The broker can then see at a glance that you are the owner, that is, authorized to trade quotas. The chassis number (VIN) and other technical data are also stored with it.

When do I receive the money?

Intermediaries collect the data of many electric car owners and aggregate it. With a certain number of applications, the GHG quota is requested at the Federal Environment Agency. It is unclear when the certificates will go on sale and when the premium will be paid. Some providers write 1-2 months. Depending on the agency, up to 400 euros are currently possible.

If you don’t want to wait that long: Some brokers offer a quick upfront payment, but it’s usually significantly lower than the actual premium.

What about company cars?

Electric cars or scooters provided by the company or fleet can also benefit from the GHG quota. In principle, it is open to any vehicle with a purely electric drive, but not to plug-in hybrids.
However, drivers of company electric vehicles should first check whether their company wants to keep the quota. Therefore, agencies recommend that you obtain the written consent of your supervisor or fleet manager before submitting an application to collect the bonus.
