Jeep Grand Wagoneer including L version: a new giant luxury SUV is coming

Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer including L version
This jeep needs space. Much space!

A great name is back: with the Jeep Wagoneer introduced in 1962, the American brand had a true icon in its range. Far ahead of the British Range Rover, the Wagoneer, which was huge by the standards of the day, was an all-terrain vehicle in the luxury class, with plush and leather, a fat V8 and excellent equipment.

Formally, the brand’s primal beast survived almost unchanged for a whopping 30 years before becoming too anachronistic even for the nostalgic among Jeep makers. In the meantime, it was ennobled with the Grand Wagoneer, after the compact Jeep Cherokee was also offered as a special Wagoneer version, with wood trim and dual headlights.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer returned in 2021

With the appearance of the first Jeep Grand Cherokee, the days of the fat “Wago” were finally numbered, and after that nothing happened for a long time. Until now, because the brand, which now belongs to the Stellantis Group, returns in 2021 with two variants, the Wagoneer and the Grand Wagoneer.

Give me the advantage – really steep rear end on the Wagoneer.

With the new Wagoneer, Jeep shows the brand’s new design line, after a long time the design language of the Grand Cherokee was reduced to the most compact models. This change of course for the brand was confirmed with the presentation of the new Jeep Grand Cherokee, which interprets the design of the front in a very similar way to the Grand Wagoneer. Lots of room, little lights – that could be the short description of the Grand Wagoneer badge. The front and rear drop off steeply, giving the seven-seater a decidedly boxy look, which is underlined by the nearly vertical B, C and D pillars when viewed from the side. The door cutouts also emphasize these lines.

Inside: a cowboy meets a businessman

When it comes to the interior of the Grand Wagoneer, Jeep uses a mix of rustic and modern. Furniture with large leather-covered surfaces could also have come from a full-size American station wagon, but in contrast there is a veritable avalanche of screens. In addition to the fully digital instruments and the obligatory 12-inch screen for the multimedia system, there is another screen for climate control below the center display and a 10.25-inch touchscreen in front of the passenger seat. It is networked with the overall system and can display stand-alone content, from videos to its own browser window.

On the center console you can see the actual width of the Jeep Wagoneer.

It continues in the rear seats: two individual screens at the height of the front headrests for the entertainment program, plus a central control screen for the climate functions in rows two and three: the Jeep Grand Wagoneer is a seven-seater in all rule. . Additionally, the Wagoneer series is the first vehicle to be equipped with the new “Amazon Fire-TV for Auto.” This entertainment feature will be integrated into the Uconnect 5 multimedia system. This enables separate streaming of videos for individual seats and integrates popular Fire TV Home apps. The Fire TV system syncs with an existing Amazon account and then makes the same features and content available on the go as on the TV at home.

Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer and the L version

In addition to the Grand Wagoneer, which as a luxury SUV is intended to take on the large Lincoln and Cadillac models, there is also a Wagoneer variant without the “Grand” designation. It is then driven with slightly less pompous equipment, but still very luxurious and is intended to serve customers who would otherwise flirt with a Ford Expedition, for example.

The L versions of both model variants, which Jeep is showing for the 2023 model year and showing at the 2022 New York International Auto Show, are even more impressive. Its wheelbase has been extended by 17.8 centimeters to 3.30 meters; Overall, the full-size jeep has grown 12 inches to 19.5 feet long. The growth is intended to optimize both the legroom for passengers in the second and third rows of seats and the volume of the trunk. Even with a full crew, the boot can carry 1,252 liters of cargo, 448 more than the standard Wagoneer. When all seats are folded down, cargo volume is 3,707 litres.

Wagoneer L with the new Hurricane R6

With the (Grand) Wagoneer L, the new Jeep engine family with the resounding name “Hurricane” debuts at the same time. These are six-cylinder in-line gasoline engines with a displacement of three liters and twin turbocharging, which are used in two power levels. In the Wagoneer L, the engine delivers 426 hp and a maximum torque of 635 Newton meters. The Grand Wagoneer L even benefits from 517 hp and a maximum of 678 Nm. It also springs air as standard and dampes semi-actively.

Despite the smaller number of cylinders and smaller displacement, the new engines directly play the role of the top aggregates. For comparison, the values of the V8 gasoline engines in the model variants without “L”, which will remain for the time being at the level of the 2022 model year: the 6.4-liter Group engine, delivering 477 hp, is used on the Grand Wagoneer; Jeep now offers the Hurricane engine as an option. The standard Wagoneer gets the 5.7-liter V8 gas engine with “only” 397 hp. However, the little machine is equipped with at least a 48-volt mild hybrid system. Wagoneers don’t currently have other approaches to modernity, like a plug-in hybrid, so there’s still room for a model update.

The truck’s ram serves as a platform

All versions of the model are available with height-adjustable air suspension and there are three different all-wheel drive systems (Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II) to choose from. With the more complex, Quadra Drive II, there is also an off-road lowering and a rear axle differential brake on board. At most, the models offer five different driving modes. The base Wagoneer, on the other hand, drives without all-wheel drive. An eight-speed automatic serves as a power distributor for all engines.

The new Wagoneer is prepared for autonomous driving, the function will be activated later.

The new Wagoneer will be built alongside the Ram 1500 at the plant in Warren, Michigan. That also explains the base, because the giant SUV sits on the platform of the big Ram truck. In all versions, three rows of seats with a total of eight seats are standard. There is the option of a center bench with two individual seats, the “captain’s chairs”, which are standard on board the Grand Cherokee L. Of course, there is no spillage in the cargo area either: if all the rear seats are folded down, the Wagoneer has a cargo volume of 3,300 litres, even with the second bench raised it is still 2,000 liters – with the L versions it is correspondingly more. The curb weights of the models vary, for an all-wheel drive version they range between 2.8 and 2.9 tons. The US Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer trailer load is 4.5 tons.

Jeep Wagoneer Prices

With the base rear-wheel drive Wagoneer, entry starts at $58,995, currently the equivalent of around €54,400. The base price of the Grand Wagoneer, which basically starts with all-wheel drive, more power and higher-quality equipment, is $88,640 or almost €81,700. Both prices are before local transfer costs. Prices for the new L versions have yet to be determined.

Jeep Wagoneer Carbide and Grand Wagoneer L

Stellantis North America

This spring, Jeep introduces the new line of Carbide equipment (left) for the Wagoneer.

During the introduction of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer L at the New York International Auto Show, Jeep introduced a new trim line called “Carbide,” which is available for both newcomers and standard versions of the series. The package includes numerous dark visual accents for the exterior and interior. It will be available to 2022 model year Reps beginning in the spring; The 2023 cars will receive it as an option for market launch in the second half of the year.

Wagoneer as its own sub-brand

Another interesting tidbit: Stellantis, the behemoth formed by FCA and PSA, now operates Wagoneer as its own sub-brand alongside Jeep. This indicates that, like Land Rover/Range Rover, there will be a split into two brand lines with additional models and the two big Wagoneers are just the beginning.

Currently, it is unlikely that the Grand Wagoneer will also come to Europe. The segment of the giant SUVs like the Mercedes GLS or the BMW X7 is only well represented, even in Germany. Competitors like Cadillac with the Escalade or Toyota with the super luxury Land Cruiser V8 have long since withdrawn from our market.

Yes, it looks steep!

No, too big and angular!

The appearance of the massive off-roader makes it clear that the developers and designers were primarily targeting conservative American customers. With a large size and a very wide range of entertainment, the most powerful Grand Wagoneer in particular is a luxury apartment on wheels. On the other hand, there is a staggering powertrain technology in a car due to launch in 2021. The six-cylinder Hurricane may be a step forward in terms of fuel efficiency; however, the electrified units are not yet in sight.
