A great name is back: with the Jeep Wagoneer introduced in 1962, the American brand had a true icon in its range. Far ahead of the British Range Rover, the Wagoneer, which was huge by the standards of the day, was an all-terrain vehicle in the luxury class, with plush and leather, a fat V8 and excellent equipment.


Formally, the brand’s primal beast survived almost unchanged for a whopping 30 years before becoming too anachronistic even for the nostalgic among Jeep makers. In the meantime, it was ennobled with the Grand Wagoneer, after the compact Jeep Cherokee was also offered as a special Wagoneer version, with wood trim and dual headlights.

With the appearance of the first Jeep Grand Cherokee, the days of the fat “Wago” were finally numbered, and after that nothing happened for a long time. Until now, because the brand, which now belongs to the Stellantis Group, returns in 2021 with two variants, the Wagoneer and the Grand Wagoneer.

In addition to the fully digital instruments and the obligatory 12-inch screen for the multimedia system, there is another screen for climate control below the center display and a 10.25-inch touchscreen in front of the passenger seat. It is networked with the overall system and can display stand-alone content, from videos to its own browser window.

It is then driven with slightly less pompous equipment, but still very luxurious and is intended to serve customers who would otherwise flirt with a Ford Expedition, for example.


The L versions of both model variants, which Jeep is showing for the 2023 model year and showing at the 2022 New York International Auto Show, are even more impressive. Its wheelbase has been extended by 17.8 centimeters to 3.30 meters; Overall, the full-size jeep has grown 12 inches to 19.5 feet long. The growth is intended to optimize both the legroom for passengers in the second and third rows of seats and the volume of the trunk. Even with a full crew, the boot can carry 1,252 liters of cargo, 448 more than the standard Wagoneer. When all seats are folded down, cargo volume is 3,707 litres.

The standard Wagoneer gets the 5.7-liter V8 gas engine with “only” 397 hp. However, the little machine is equipped with at least a 48-volt mild hybrid system. Wagoneers don’t currently have other approaches to modernity, like a plug-in hybrid, so there’s still room for a model update.

All versions of the model are available with height-adjustable air suspension and there are three different all-wheel drive systems (Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II) to choose from. With the more complex, Quadra Drive II, there is also an off-road lowering and a rear axle differential brake on board. At most, the models offer five different driving modes. The base Wagoneer, on the other hand, drives without all-wheel drive. An eight-speed automatic serves as a power distributor for all engines.

With the base rear-wheel drive Wagoneer, entry starts at $58,995, currently the equivalent of around €54,400.
