Seven e-book readers are “good”
One device instead of many books: eBook readers are especially useful when traveling. Stiftung Warentest rated most of the devices in the test as “good”. What you need to know about this.
E-book readers are particularly useful during vacations: with them, travelers can read many stories without lugging around heavy books. Stiftung Warentest tested them. Seven of the eight tested devices received a “good” rating from Stiftung Warentest. This is demonstrated by a study in the current magazine “test” (05/2022). The tested e-book readers cost between 79 and 430 euros.
If you want to buy an e-book reader, you first have to decide between two worlds: Amazon’s Kindle devices or e-readers from Kobo, Pocketbook and Tolino.
Amazon: The American company offers many conveniences, but it isolates its users: you can almost only buy e-books from Amazon, you can’t pass on copy-protected titles, and you can’t borrow books from public libraries either. According to testers, those who choose the Amazon system are less flexible. Because Amazon’s Kindle devices couldn’t open the Epub format in the test, which is often used by public libraries. That’s why they only got a “good” rating despite superior battery life.
Kobo, Pocketbook and Tolino: Competition offers more freedom: copy protection is not as strict; Unlike Kindle, customers of these platforms can often pass eBooks in private settings. It is also possible to borrow books from libraries.
The selection of devices is very large.
The battery life of electronic reading devices is usually long, with normal use lasting several weeks. However, the battery life of the readers in our test was very different: the average reading time per battery charge was between 13 and 133 hours.
At the top -with a note of 1.7- were: Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 2021 (around 130 euros), Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition 2021 (around 190 euros), Tolino Vision 6 (just under 170 euros) , Kobo Elipsa (about 430 euros) and Kobo Sage (about 290 euros).
Tip: Classics and works by unknown authors are also often available for free, for example in the Weltbild and Hugendubel online shops.
