As soon as the vacation home is occupied, father and son run to the beach. The mother, on the other hand, walks behind. A short time later she shines on the sea shore: she finds amber half a centimeter in size. Half an hour later again. Father and son watch in fascination. “Amber, really?” Tim asks. Yes really. The many mounds of seaweed are perfect for amber hunters, because they get trapped in mounds of tree resin that are millions of years old.

Øster Hurup is a municipality in the Himmerland region and is located on the northeast coast of Denmark in the Kattegat. The sandy beach is suitable for children, the sea slowly deepens. As if the amber were a good omen, the groves around Øster Hurup turn out to be a mushroom paradise. Instead of golden brown tree sap, they are expecting golden and grayish brown vaginal streaks. Since the edible species of mushrooms belong to the same genus as death caps, only the connoisseurs should collect Amanita fulva and Amanita vaginata (the vaginal streak). But there are also magnificent porcini mushrooms. Speaking of collecting, seeking, catching: Tim once knew and loved crabbing in Sweden. The Danish congeners in the port of Øster Hurup are not inferior to the Swedes: they live in herds under the stones in the shallow basin of the port.

Tim attaches pieces of sausage from the supermarket to his fishing pole (a clothespin with string will do if necessary) and drops them on a string in the water where he suspects the animals are. If a crab bites, the trick is to pick it up quickly with one hand and carefully place it in the net with the other hand. The twelve-year-old boy then places the animals outside the net in the bucket of water, where they share a temporary floor with other animals. Means: They can finish eating their sausage in peace and then they are released again. If you don’t have any equipment with you, you can simply borrow it for free at the port. Plastic buckets, landing nets, and fishing rods are placed there based on trust. Half an hour’s drive from Øster Hurup is Mariagerfjord, a 38-kilometre stretch of sea that runs inland from Kattegat to the town of Hobro. This is where the easy ten kilometer “Panoramaruten” hiking trail begins at the marina. It passes by cows, fruit trees and sheep, the latter even allowing themselves to be petted to the delight of the young. After about 2.5 hours of walking, you will reach a place called Bramslev Bakker. From there you can return to Hobro in 30 minutes on the steamboat called “Svanen” (Swan).
More about the subject
Three kayaks wait on the other side of the fjord. At first, Tim just wants to row a boat with his father, but then, thanks to Carsten Nørgård, owner of the kayak rental, his skepticism fades on this sunny, windless day. After paddling for a while, he challenges Tim to acrobatic exercises, letting him balance on two kayaks with both feet. The 59-year-old sold his farm with pigs, cows and fruit 16 years ago and turned his passion into a career: “I just decided to offer what I like to do.”
