Health, fitness, watch faces and more › Macer Head

Apple previewed watchOS 9 at the WWDC 2022 keynote. Apple Watch users will have more watch faces to choose from in the future. In the updated training app, advanced metrics, views, and training experiences help users take their training to the next level. watchOS 9 brings sleep stages to the Sleep app, and a new FDA-approved AFib history feature offers deeper insight into a user’s status (this feature appears to be available only in the US at first). The new medication app makes it easy for users to manage, understand and track medications conveniently and discreetly. However, there are plenty of other innovations in watchOS 9.

Apple introduces four new watch faces with watchOS 9. lunar, which represents the relationship between the Gregorian calendar and the lunar calendar used in many cultures, including Chinese, Islamic and Hebrew; Playtime, a dynamic artwork exclusive to Apple Watch created in collaboration with artist Joi Fulton; Metropolitan, a classic type-oriented dial that changes style as the Digital Crown is turned; and Astronomy, an original watch face that has been completely redesigned to include a new star map and updated cloud data.

Additionally, watchOS 9 features improved and modernized complications.

training app

As in recent years, Apple has also improved the training app in many nooks and crannies. The Workout app has been updated to provide richer performance metrics and new training experiences to help you reach your fitness goals. You can switch between training views using the Digital Crown, so you can see key metrics for different training styles.

Heart rate zones, which can be created manually or automatically calculated using personalized health data, can be used to monitor the intensity of a workout

For triathletes, the Workout app now supports a new type of multisport training that automatically switches between each sequence of swim, bike, and run workouts and uses motion sensors to recognize movement patterns. As each workout is completed, a redesigned summary page in the fitness app provides additional details with interactive graphs for deeper analysis. You can also create individual workouts.

New running form metrics, including stride length, ground contact time, and vertical oscillation, can be added as metrics in training views. These metrics are displayed in the Fitness app overview and in the Health app, where users can see trends over time and learn from patterns.

sleep app

Sleep tracking in watchOS 9 offers even more insight with the introduction of sleep stages. Using signals from the accelerometer and heart rate sensor, Apple Watch can detect when users are in REM, core, or deep sleep. Users view sleep stage data on Apple Watch in the Sleep app and can view more detailed information such as sleep time and additional metrics like heart rate and respiration rate in the sleep comparison charts in the app Health on iPhone.

Apple introduces a new medication app with watchOS 9. This is to remind you to take medications and vitamins.
