Sportbox encourages physical training

A sports box at the coal mine site is intended to provide an incentive for physical training. If well received, other boxes in the city area could soon follow.

With a “Geocaching Adventure Laboratory” and the construction of a sports box, the attractiveness of the leisure area is increased with two projects. The Sports and Recreation Committee also learned that the Sports Development Working Group will soon be able to present its first results since it began its work.

Anna Schepers from the sports department presented the Sportbox project, the first box is already on the basketball court of the mine. Includes a fitness equipment rental offer. With an app, a time slot can be booked and the devices can be used. The investment amounts to 15,800 euros, 70 percent will be financed by the federal and state governments, and the city will contribute 30 percent. The box will open with a day of action on September 23. It is a pilot project, more boxes could follow.

The Geocaching Adventure Lab project is already underway in Dolberg. Includes a scavenger hunt designed to visit various locations and answer questions. The premium account can be reserved for 30 euros per year, more lab caches are planned for Vorhelm and the downtown area, the project is free for the city. “The creativity of the administration was incorporated,” says athletic director Stephanie Kosbab proudly.

The SFA ruled in favor of intensifying direct contact with the clubs after the restrictions due to the pandemic. For this purpose, meetings should increasingly take place in club rooms again. Clubs that wish to do so can contact the city’s sports association, which will forward applications to the committee. With this in mind, outgoing city association president Martin Hummels bid the committee farewell with words of praise: “We have achieved a lot for sport here.”

The head of the department, Christoph Wessels, also informed the committee that the “Sport Development Task Force” will be able to present an initial interim report to the SFA at the November meeting: “We are on the right track.” concept for Ahlen sports.
