10th graders from the Georg-Büchner-Gymnasium in Seelze win a fitness challenge
letter. When Nanette Kuhlwein, sports advisor at the Regional State Office for Schools and Education, arrived for the ceremony in the sports hall of the Georg-Büchner-Gymnasium (GBG), the students of class 10c were playing Quidditch, with pool noodles in instead of a broom between her legs. She had come to honor the young people for their successful participation in the “5fit Challenge” competition. The class secured first place in the North/West region in the double year 9/10. In addition to Seelze, these also include Garbsen and Wunstorf.

Students act as a team.
“The students compete as a team together with the ninth graders. Since we are six classes, twelve classes from our school alone participated,” said physical education teacher Kai Kaufmann. For his performance in the athletic competition, Kuhlwein rewarded the class with certificates, candy, and a soccer ball. The most successful individual contestant was Amy Chora. The School Sports Advisory Service of the State Department of Education and School has once again announced this year the school sports competition “Reto 5fit”. It is aimed at grades one through ten, who can test their fitness.
Participants complete five stations
Each student has completed five different seasons as an alternative to the national youth games. This included a “three foot jump” in which everyone had to jump three times in a row as far as they could. For the result, the total distance was added. In the “Heel-Toe” discipline, students had to remain in a so-called plank position (like a push-up) for one minute and alternately tap the heel of the other foot with the tips of the toes. The maximum number counts towards the qualification.

The overall result counts
Another discipline is the “line run”. The students had to run back and forth between two lines six meters apart in 60 seconds as many times as they could while touching the lines with their hands. When jumping rope, the youngsters had to make as many strides as possible in one minute. The respective results are added to form the overall result. In the “Target Toss”, each student threw a tennis ball between their legs ten times and attempted to throw it through a hoop six meters away. Every hit counted.
The school bets on fashionable sports
The technical advisory team created a conversion table, which allowed them to determine a maximum of 100 points per discipline from the data obtained. “It was a solid team effort. We are very proud of our students,” Kaufmann said. In general, the GBG is sporty. Instead of the classic federal youth games, the school focuses more on so-called hip sports and tournaments in respective years.”We climbed like we were in sixth grade, we’ve done yoga, mermaids and much more,” said Kaufmann.

Due to Corona, the sports program was only possible to a limited extent for two years. Now students and teachers are already looking forward to the traditional “teachers against students” football tournament at the end of the school year. “It’s part of the tradition that the manager gets a foul and he gets a penalty that he has to convert,” Kaufmann said. Of course, director Andreas Schmidt must not be seriously injured. GBG is the largest school in Seelze with more than 1400 students and more than 100 teachers.
