Anja Würfl has been known as the woman on the grill for almost five years. Handle a wolf in the kitchen, tame a fire in the garden, or sweat in sportswear on the mat. She is a complete talent and a true powerful woman.
Anja’s passion is sports: She doesn’t just do fitness, pilates and aerobics. She is also a trainer and has a trainer’s license.
Anja not only turned her hobby sport into a profession. Nutrition has always played a role in his life. The most important principle of his has always been to eat and enjoy without giving up.
So, together with her husband Matthias, she started a blog that later became the grill and food magazine “die Frau am Grill” and the YouTube channel of the same name. Here she offers her followers a variety of grill recipes and cooks several times a week.
Anja Würfl conducted an exclusive interview with FITFORFUN and cooked a delicious summer stew for you that satisfies all tastes.
FIT FOR FUN: How did the initial blog “Salz und Pfeffer” come about and how did the YouTube channel and the barbecue and food magazine “die Frau am Grill” come about?
Anja Wurfl: I am a passionate fitness trainer and quickly had a desire to offer nutritional content on my website to draw the attention of people outside of my customer base to me and my activities.
Fitness and cooking are always themes that go well together. Grill recipes in particular were very popular, so I initially specialized entirely in the area of grilling, as the subject has always fascinated me.
After being nicknamed “the grill woman”, I separated my physical pursuits from cooking and grilling and the independent BBQ and food magazine was born.
FIT FOR FUN: What recipes do you focus on?
Anja Wurfl: It must be said that grilled recipes are the most popular on our YouTube channel. On the blog, on the other hand, we also offer vegetarian dishes for all tastes. The audience accepts vegetarian recipes from our blog better than those from YouTube.
FIT FOR FUN: What role does sustainability in cooking and grilling play for you?
Anja Wurfl: Sustainability plays an important role for us in food preparation and meat consumption. The topic is becoming more and more current and important, therefore also for us and for our community. We pay close attention to the origin of the meat and obtain it mainly from the home slaughterhouse.
It is also very important for us to process the whole animal and not just use the fillets. We also practice abstinence, as there are many other plant-based protein sources you can use to avoid falling into a nutrient deficiency.
FIT FOR FUN: From the beginning, did you want to create a magazine with something for everyone?
Anja Wurfl: For YouTube, it quickly became clear that it was mainly about grilling. But since our channel should be for everyone, we show vegetarian recipes in our magazine.
The meat and grill recipes and themes are, of course, the most popular among readers. For me, however, there is more to it than simply presenting a piece. Garnishes and sauces also play a role. That makes it more diverse and healthy.
FIT FOR FUN: How hard is the blog and YouTube channel for you now?
Anja Wurfl: The blog and the YouTube channel are very laborious, but it is just a dream of ours. I still offer online fitness courses in the mornings and evenings, which gives me a great balance.
We have a 24/7 daily life. That demands a lot from us, but gives even more. Something is published at least 2 or 3 times a week. The prescription is not enough.
We filmed, prepped, divorced, and took care of social media. My husband, Matti, is primarily responsible for SEO, and since I have a degree in art, I can put my knowledge to good use when it comes to design.
FIT FOR FUN: To what extent has the blog and YouTube channel changed since it was founded?
Anja Wurfl: We start with good homemade recipes. So we did things in a more traditional way and sometimes cooked more unusual dishes from the past, like lung.
The reason for this was that we simply wanted to bring the use of the entire animal back to the fore. There were also recipes from my grandmother. Over time, more exotic and diverse recipes were added.
SUITABLE FOR FUN: Do you see a connection between your passions for grilling and sports?
Anja Wurfl: I have recipes with me that go well with fitness, but also some that are not made for the fitness blog. The “Eat the stupid pot” is out of the question, for example.
These two addresses can only be partially combined. For me, however, it is always important to remember that the dose makes the poison and that you can treat yourself to something to balance your physical activity. Just enjoy.
FIT FOR FUN: How do you reconcile all of this?
Anja Wurfl: We live for our work. We live at home and also work here. After work, for example, we continue with a glass of wine on our balcony in the summer and brainstorm new ideas.
But it’s also just fun for us to put all our strength into work. You just have to always want to take care of work.
