Subsidies for buying an electric car could soon rise even higher. And fuel prices of around 2 euros per liter also make the Stromer look more and more advantageous. This trend is also reflected in the statistics of a large auto insurance broker.
There are many myths about the German’s favorite child, the car. This includes the supposed certainty that Stromers are only suitable for occasional short trips. “The fact that electric cars cover fewer kilometers than combustion engines can be refuted based on the annual mileage of our customers,” says Rainer Klipp, Managing Director of Motor Vehicle Insurance at Check24.
Motor vehicle insurance: Average annual mileage
“The range of electric cars is constantly being improved and there is no longer a reason to worry about getting stuck.” This is also reflected in the statistics from Germany’s largest comparison portal: electric car drivers drove an average of 12,127 kilometers last year. That’s 1,200 miles or 18.8 percent more than gasoline engine owners.
And typical long-distance cars with diesel engines were driven an average of just 922 kilometers or 7.6 percent more than electric cars by surveyed consumers. As can also be seen from the findings of car insurance policies through Check24, owners of hybrid vehicles drive 12,763 kilometers, 14 percent more than the average for all car classes.
Motor vehicle insurance: part of the comprehensive coverage
A look at the total number of all car insurance contracts concluded through Check24 also shows that only 37 percent of car owners have comprehensive all-risk insurance, which also covers accidents in which they are at fault. The picture is different for electric car owners, almost all of whom (93 percent) have comprehensive insurance.
At 85 percent, hybrids are also more frequently fully insured. This proportion is lower, at just 33 percent, among owners of gasoline vehicles. “Electric and hybrid vehicles are usually fully insured because they are on average much younger and therefore have a higher current value,” explains Check24 manager Klipp.
Full payments if you are at fault
Because: “Comprehensive insurance always makes sense if the owner is unable to replace the car with their own resources after a total loss.” However, it does not cover accidental damage to their own car caused by themselves. Damage caused by vandalism is also covered. In addition, comprehensive insurance includes all the benefits of comprehensive insurance. This includes damage caused by theft, fire, storms, wildlife accidents, and marten bites.
The most popular hybrid and electric cars of 2021
Check24 also examined its customer data for the currently most popular electric speedster manufacturers and models: The Renault Zoe is therefore the most popular electric car ahead of VW’s E-Up. Tesla continues with two models in the other places. And when it comes to hybrid vehicles, Toyota remains the dominant brand among Check24 users, with three models in the top five.
