Electric cars have more kilometers on the clock

Subsidies for buying an electric car could soon rise even higher. And fuel prices of around 2 euros per liter also make the Stromer look more and more advantageous. This trend is also reflected in the statistics of a large auto insurance broker.

There are many myths about the German’s favorite child, the car. This includes the supposed certainty that Stromers are only suitable for occasional short trips. “The fact that electric cars cover fewer kilometers than combustion engines can be refuted based on the annual mileage of our customers,” says Rainer Klipp, Managing Director of Motor Vehicle Insurance at Check24.

“The range of electric cars is constantly being improved and there is no longer a reason to worry about getting stuck.” This is also reflected in the statistics from Germany’s largest comparison portal: electric car drivers drove an average of 12,127 kilometers last year. That’s 1,200 miles or 18.8 percent more than gasoline engine owners.

And typical long-distance cars with diesel engines were driven an average of just 922 kilometers or 7.6 percent more than electric cars by surveyed consumers. As can also be seen from the findings of car insurance policies through Check24, owners of hybrid vehicles drive 12,763 kilometers, 14 percent more than the average for all car classes.

A look at the total number of all car insurance contracts concluded through Check24 also shows that only 37 percent of car owners have comprehensive all-risk insurance, which also covers accidents in which they are at fault. The picture is different for electric car owners, almost all of whom (93 percent) have comprehensive insurance.
