If you drive carefully, you pay less: the telematic rates of some insurance companies promise attractive discounts. How much is the savings? And is there any downside?
Currently, they still live in a niche: only about 500,000 drivers currently use a telematic tariff. Is it just because these offers are relatively new and still unknown? Do the fees have hidden drawbacks that deter many drivers? Or do you not save any money with said insurance? This is shown by the new Verivox calculations.
What is a telematic rate?
Users of a telematic rate have a certain control of their behavior behind the wheel. An in-car black box, GPS data device, or app is used to transmit data. The insurance company stores the data and calculates the premium based on it. The calculation includes, among other things, speed, braking behavior and driving times.
To do this, the comparison portal calculated the savings effect for three model cases: How expensive is a standard rate, how cheap is the telematics alternative with a maximum discount?
This is what you can save
The result is clear: telematics fares are constantly ahead – their price advantage is almost a third.

Important: Only a small proportion of policyholders get the maximum possible discount. Because it is also linked to criteria that you cannot influence or can only influence to a limited extent, for example the time of your journey or the type of road you are driving on.
“But even with the average savings cited by industry representatives, many offers are still cheap and sometimes below the top of the market for ‘normal’ rates,” says Verivox CEO Wolfgang Schütz.
Telematics rate: for whom is it worth it?
The new rates are particularly valuable for novice drivers spending their first few years behind the wheel, says Michael Bruns of Stiftung Warentest. Later, however, so many parameters flow into the tariff “that it would save comparatively little.”
