Gross premiums rise 11.68%
“Our key figures have developed well, despite the turbulent times,” Axel Eilers said after the meeting. Compared to the same quarter of the previous year, gross written premiums increased by 11.68% to €42.65 million (2021: €38.18 million). The mutual insurance association had 863,939 members (Q2 2021: 784,025) and registered 1.24 million contracts (Q2 2021: 1.08 million). The number of employees rose to 186 (previous year: 165).
Home content insurance remains the strongest segment with a 58.94% share of total sales. “Despite high competitive pressure, we were once again able to record high growth in the bicycle segment. Compared to 2021, sales here have again increased significantly by 31.89%,” explained Gerold Saathoff.
Policyholders reported 25,758 claims (Q2 2021: 19,969). Payments for insurance claims amounted to 17.2 million euros gross and increased by 33.93% compared to the second quarter of 2021. On the one hand, spring storms come into play here, on the other hand, the stock of FRP significantly increased with a corresponding increase in damage.
Personalia: Featured Board Member
The new board member, Christine Lühr-Boekhoff, was introduced to the member representatives for the first time. Since August 1, she is responsible for the “Finance, Controlling, Investments” department in the Board of Directors. She has been part of the company since 2007, as an authorized signatory for six years, also at a managerial level. “From our point of view, we have found the ideal cast,” says Axel Eilers. For Christine Lühr-Boekhoff, change means “further development”: “I hope to be able to shape and advance further from this position.”
New Board Members Elected
The meeting of member representatives elected Klaus Groß (Westerstede), Wilfried Lange (Wiefelstede) and Jürgen Oeltjendiers (Westerstede) to the committee. In the future, the three will support the work of the Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Helmut Oeltjendiers, with Rolf Hinrichs and Gerold Eilers. Gerold Oltmanns, Westerstede’s tax consultant, who left at his own request, was fired.
The Supervisory Board now consists of six members. With the adjustments, AV is reacting to the development of the company: sales have increased continuously, as has the number of members. “This brings with it greater responsibility and a broader business field than a few years ago. That is why we decided to position ourselves more broadly”, summarizes Axel Eilers.
Perspective: 100 years of AV
Looking ahead to the second half of the year, the Board of Directors assumes that the positive evolution will continue. In 2023, the mutual will also celebrate its centenary. Axel Eilers: “Since its beginnings in November 1923 as a joint firefighting fund, AV has had roots in Westerstede and in Ammerland. We will appreciate that next year.”
