You have probably come across the pink fruit in the supermarket and wondered what it is. Here comes the answer: dragon fruit or pitaya.

Dragon fruit have pink skin with green tips that resemble a dragon’s wings. Inside it is white with small black dots.

It originally comes from South and Central America. In the meantime, however, dragon fruit is grown in many countries and is available throughout the year.

One thing is clear, the pink pitaya definitely turns heads, but how do you actually eat it?

Identify Ripe Dragon Fruit

Dragon fruits usually have a pink skin, but there are also yellow ones. The whitish pulp is hidden under the skin, which is interspersed with black seeds. Pitaya tastes like a mix of kiwi and watermelon.

The flavor of a dragon fruit depends on its degree of ripeness and can range from slightly tart to sweet. The fruits are harvested when they are not ripe and continue to ripen during transport.

You can recognize a ripe pitaya by its bright pink color. According to nutrition expert Silke Kroll of the Bavarian Consumer Center, if you press down on the shell with your finger, it gives slightly.

By the way, you can not eat the shell despite its beautiful color.. You must remove them before eating, or you can just remove the fruit.

Dragon fruit are very low in calories as they contain more than 90 percent water. Fruits also stimulate digestion, but can have a laxative effect in large amounts.

Dragon fruit not only looks beautiful, but also contains valuable ingredients such as vitamin C, B vitamins, and minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, and iron, as well as fiber.

You can cut the dragon fruit and then scoop it out with a spoon like a kiwi. Of course, you can also finely chop the meat and then enjoy.

Dragon fruit has a sweet and sour flavor, but is generally quite mild. It is pleasantly cool and should therefore be enjoyed cold.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to laboriously remove the black seeds, you can easily eat them. They even stimulate digestion.

If you don’t want to scoop the pitaya out with a spoon, but want to dice or slice it, you’ll need to cut off the ends of the fruit first. Then cut the shell at the base of the flower and then you can remove the shell.
