Sport, nutrition, sleep: how to get body and soul in shape for the summer

You know that moment when you mow the lawn for the first time? When the fresh, lush green spring grass suddenly lurks under the winter grass? Do you know the moment when the sun wakes you up with its power and turns the cabin upside down?

In 2022, in my opinion, spring cleaning was particularly important. Two years of Corona and a war that started in winter left a lot of dirt, figuratively speaking. Physically, some things really stood still. From a purely psychological point of view, it was quite a lot of negative energy that affected us all to a greater or lesser extent. Regardless of all this, I have become accustomed to an important ritual: every April I completely cleanse my body and soul.

The first races are slow and intense.

And here’s how it works: To develop a new awareness of running, I first switch to recovery mode in the spring. It’s just a 6 beat for a few weeks. It’s these races where the road only leads to myself. These races are my meditation.

I slowly enjoy the air, the buds everywhere, the special power of the sun. I breathe consciously and deeply, as soon as I accelerate, my watch stops me with an alarm. I don’t want to be fast, I don’t want to perform well, I want to be healthy. I want serene. And I want my body to recover easily. I deliberately call them detox races.

For an experienced runner, they can be a real pain. Because everything seems so terribly slow. At the latest when other riders overtake you, you need one thing above all: the discipline not to be faster. The challenge is: Getting home with hardly any sweat.

Water! Just water!

I love energy drinks. I like apple juice, coffee is good for me. Non-alcoholic beer is really a treat for me, but: For spring body cleansing, it can only be water. It is gladly mixed with fresh mint or a little lemon, but only with water – four to five liters a day.

It is the feeling of being clean. No unnecessary sugar, no superfluous carbohydrates. Pure is the magic word. And if you want to fix your body, if you want to clean it with a damp cloth, the only thing left to do is water. Mint and lemon are the cleaning agents.

Foods that clean the inside!

When it comes to nutrition, I focus on unprocessed foods during my spring body and soul cleansing. It is exclusively freshly cooked, with ingredients from the region. Meat and vegetables are the absolute base. Both come from the organic farmer around the corner and are eaten in moderation.

If it is bread, then it is baked by hand, without additives. Most of the time I leave it out entirely. There’s always some “grandma’s bread” in my freezer around this time. In my grandmother’s village, only one type of bread has been baked in a small bakery for many generations, a sourdough bread. Once thawed, it keeps for a full two weeks without getting moldy, without hardening.

There are also many legumes and nuts, sugar is taboo and alcohol is also prohibited. It can be fruit in all variants. But never something that matures on a plane. So apples and pears play the main role. After just a few days, my body looks much neater.

Good dream as a window cleaning agent.

For me there is nothing more important in life than clarity. A clear view of everyday things. This requires very clean windows. I create this effect mostly by getting enough sleep. So I go to bed much earlier than under normal circumstances. The mobile phone is not in the bedroom, all the electronic devices are not present in this room either.

If I’m not tired yet, a book usually helps. After ten pages I am tired after all. We eat until 6 pm, after that I just drink. If I find that I am still too active at night, I usually do a second run of three to four kilometers. After a hot shower afterwards, the bed is announced immediately. Crowned 100 percent successful in falling asleep.

For good eyesight I need a good nine hours of sleep. After that though, I definitely have the perspective and clarity I want. For me, sleep is also the key to a healthy soul. Here I process everything that overwhelms me throughout the day, the weeks.

According to the motto: Every morning a new sky opens.

Is that how it works.
