The IFFA Frankfurt meat fair (May 14-19) is increasingly dealing with plant proteins. More than 200 of the 860 exhibitors inform visitors about technologies and solutions for alternatives to meat, according to the Frankfurt trade fair company.
The business area with vegetarian and vegan products was also awarded the title of the world’s leading trade fair “IFFA – Technology for Alternative Meat and Proteins”.
Forecast: Meat alternatives will become even more popular
Companies that are only now starting to deal with the issue only have a 50-50 chance of surviving, said consultant and former Rügenwalder Mühle manager Godo Röben. Those who ignore the trend will disappear from the market. He expects that at the next IFFA one in two exhibitors will deal with vegetable proteins. Rügenwalder was one of the first providers to constantly switch to meat alternatives and is now generating more sales than with conventional products.
The almost 11,000 specialist butchers are noticing the trend towards vegetarian and vegan diets, especially in the catering sector or for ready meals, reported the president of the German Butchers Association, Herbert Dohrmann. However, in the vast majority of cases, customers at the store counter continued to demand high-quality meat products that the artisan produced regionally and sustainably. Currently, companies are having problems with the sharp increase in the prices of energy, raw materials and materials. Along with higher labor costs, this could lead to higher prices.
Mechanical engineers almost at pre-crisis level
Machine builders working in the industry report long lead times as a result of material shortages. The companies produced €14.8 billion worth of food packaging and processing machines last year, the VDMA association reported. That was a 7 percent increase. At 15.3 billion euros, sales almost reached the pre-crisis level of 2019.
Compared to the previous IFFA in 2019, the current edition has a good 150 exhibitors or 15 percent less with the same area. Suppliers from Russia and Belarus are missing, as well as from China, which is characterized by the blockade, explained the head of the trade fair Wolfgang Marzin. But all sizes of industry are represented. According to him, the fair is supporting five Ukrainian exhibitors to facilitate their access to the market.
