These were the most popular smartphones in 2021

The Samsung Galaxy A12 was the most popular smartphone last year with almost 52 million devices shipped worldwide. The Korean mobile phone manufacturer has thus ousted the previous winner, Apple.

With its Galaxy A12, Samsung leads the list of the most delivered smartphones in the last year. This was determined by the independent market research company Omdia. Samsung has thus supplanted the previous winner Apple. The US group has held the top three spots with its iPhone models in previous years.

The Samsung Galaxy A12 launched in the fourth quarter of 2020. Since then, quarterly shipments since 2021 have almost consistently exceeded 10 million units, Omdia reports. An exception was the second quarter of 2021. There were production bottlenecks at Samsung plants in India and Vietnam due to the corona pandemic.

Mid-range devices equipped with better features

According to Omdia, Samsung shipped around 52 million units of the Galaxy A12 last year. As the market research company writes, the Galaxy A12 is the first Samsung model to have shipped more than 50 million units in a year.

The market research company sees the reason for the success of the Galaxy A12 in the integration of functions in the manufacturer’s budget A models, which was previously only reserved for the best smartphones. As an example, Omdia cites the introduction of multiple cameras: the A12 has four built-in.

Apple shipped nearly 42 million iPhone 12 devices to retailers in the same period, putting it in second place. The iPhone 13, released in September, ranks third with around 35 million smartphones shipped.

Xiaomi with cheap smartphone in fifth place

In fourth place among the top 10 most shipped phones is the iPhone 11 with 33.6 million devices shipped. Xiaomi’s Redmi 9A model ranks fifth with almost 27 million units. The model’s average retail price was $78, according to Omdia.

In places six to nine are the iPhone 12 Pro Max, 13 Pro Max, 12 Pro and 13 Pro models. Last in the top 10 is the Samsung Galaxy A02. Of these, the Korean manufacturer shipped 18.3 million devices last year.

iPhone 13 Pro Max is the most expensive model on the list

The A02 is the second cheapest model in the top 10 after the Xiaomi Redmi 9A. The most expensive device is the iPhone 13 Pro Max, which costs an average of $1,324.

Figures for the world’s best-selling smartphones do not reflect individual regional markets. Experience has shown that more affordable smartphones like the Galaxy A12 are sold and delivered in economically weak countries like India than in other regions. Also, the unit figures sent by manufacturers to dealers say nothing about units sold.
