Anyone who wants to keep fit in the summer but doesn’t want to break a sweat in the gym has plenty of opportunities to work out in Freiburg. For many sports there are also opportunities to train outdoors.
Calisthenics at the Sternwaldwiese
What used to be a boring fitness track is now a calisthenics park in Freiburg’s Sternwald. Here you can train with your own weight and combine running and strength training. There is also a beautiful view of Freiburg.
Jogging in the Dreisam
The Freiburg corridor motorway is definitely the Dreisam. Especially in summer it’s nice to go for a walk there, because of the river, the air doesn’t feel so stuffy and hot.
If you don’t want to run alone, you can join the fudder Running Club: every Friday at 7:30am there is a relaxed run through the city.
Spikeball in Eschholzpark
A small yellow ball that must be passed over a net, describing the sport of clinching. In Freiburg, this will be played in many places as soon as it gets warmer. For example, the Eschholzpark or the Seepark are popular.
Yoga in the garden city
The green area of the Stadtgarten invites you to spread out your yoga mat, especially in the mornings and on weekends. Freiburg yoga schools and trainers also offer courses there on an irregular basis.
Race in the Dietenbachpark
Not only is the Dreisam a perfect place for jogging, but you can also go for a good lap in the Dietenbachpark. There is also a “park run” here every Saturday morning. This is a small unofficial competition.
Beach volleyball at Lake Opfinger
Summer, sun, beach volleyball: everything goes together perfectly. There are a number of beach volleyball courts in Freiburg for that feeling of vacation and training at the same time. There is a public field, for example, at Opfinger See directly at the bathing bay near the barbecue areas, the DLRG house and the kiosk.
Boulder at the Wiehre station
Instead of sweating in the sweltering climbing hall with high temperatures, you can also rock climb outdoors in Freiburg. A handy place is the Wiehre train station. Here is a retaining wall that works well as a boulder wall. Very important: To protect yourself against falls, you should always use a crash pad!
Skating in the Dietenbach Park
With an area of 2,400 square meters and a wide variety of skate elements, the Dietenbachpark skate park is one of the largest and most modern skate parks in Germany. The facility is suitable for beginners and professionals alike and opened in 2020. The highlight of the park is the replica of California’s Arto Saari Bowl, a round pool, also known as the backyard pool.
Climbing the stairs of the Lorettoberg
A quick and strenuous exercise is climbing stairs, yes, it is a sport! Running up a flight of stairs is even more difficult than jogging. This works particularly well on the Lorettoberg in the direction of Speemannplatz, where there is a particularly long staircase.
Riding a racing bike in Schauinsland
The walk through the local Freiburg mountain is a strenuous exercise. If you cycle up the mountain, you will overcome the 773 meters of difference in altitude and you will get some beautiful views and a relaxed ride downhill as compensation.
Play table tennis at the Holzmarkt
The plates at the Holzmarkt near the Goethe-Gymnasium are freely accessible to all table tennis enthusiasts. You can start playing without registering.
There are a total of around 60 freely accessible table tennis tables in Freiburg, which are listed on the table tennis map, for example.
